How to avoid court fights for child care, parents say

A Florida woman is suing her ex-husband for custody of their 3-year-old son because the child’s father has died, the Associated Press reported on Thursday.

Shannon Sargent filed suit against her former husband, Robert Sargents, in U.S. District Court in Tampa in October and filed the lawsuit Thursday after the ex-boyfriend refused to take responsibility for his son’s care, according to a press release from the couple’s attorneys.

Sargent claims that her ex, Michael Sargants, “failed to provide adequate care for his child and thereby caused a great harm to his mental health and well-being.”

According to the press release, the two were separated in 2013 and married in 2016.

The lawsuit alleges that Sargets son suffers from behavioral problems and has severe depression.

Shelby County Judge David A. Schmitzer will decide the case on April 24, according the AP.

Schamitzer has not yet ruled on the lawsuit, which is seeking to “preserve the custody of Robert Sargeant, Jr., and their child,” the AP reported.

The suit is seeking unspecified monetary damages.

Sargeants attorney told the AP that the judge would not comment on the case because of pending litigation.
