Lawyers for a 17-year-old girl who was killed in a fatal car accident in Melbourne have filed a court application to have her custody ordered.

A woman who was travelling with the girl, whose name has not been released, said the family was not sure why she was not in court.
She said they had been advised that the court would be open to any reason for her not attending.
The woman said she had seen the girl twice before and that she was very popular.
She told the court she was happy with the result of the application.
