How to help a friend of a friend who’s been in foster care
A friend of an acquaintance who’s recently been placed in foster home for a mental illness is in for a rough time.
Wyoming has moved to the forefront of its anti-foster care legislation.
Its new laws make it legal to place a person with a mental disorder in a home, and they also allow a person to take them into custody for a year and then release them.
Lawmakers have proposed a range of other reforms, including changing how foster care agencies are managed.
It’s unclear if that changes the current system of placement and foster care, which is designed to help families of children with developmental and developmental disabilities find permanent homes.
“If you are in foster or adopt care, you can’t do anything,” said Jennifer E. Stagg, who helps people with mental health issues get help.
“You can’t get help until you get into a home.
It takes time.”
In a report released Monday, the advocacy group Families Advancing Justice found that nearly 3,000 people with developmental disabilities were placed in a foster home by 2015.
They were more likely to be abused and neglected, and often placed in the care of relatives or others who could not care for them themselves, the group said.
In the years since, more than 2,500 people have been placed with developmental disorders, the report found.
In a state where more than 1 in 4 children lives in poverty, many families of people with disabilities have little to no access to support.
Many people with intellectual disabilities are placed in private homes or foster care for developmental disabilities.
That’s because states like Montana and Oklahoma do not have adequate legal protections for such people, Egan said.
Stagg said the best way to help someone with developmental issues is to work with them, rather than simply placing them in a place where they will have difficulty.
“We have to work together, and that’s what we’re doing with [the children], trying to find ways that we can help them,” she said.
“We’re trying to provide a place that they can live their lives, where they can have a good life, where the community can support them.”
Egan said she believes the state is doing all it can to improve the care it provides for children with disabilities, but she’s concerned the current foster system is not providing enough support to people with learning disabilities, and to people who have learning disabilities in general.
“I think there’s a real need for more services, and it’s going to be a challenge,” she told CBS News.
“There’s no place in this state that will be able to care for all of these people.”
